Celebrating Christmas: A Blend of Filipino and American Traditions

Posted by Ely Mata on

As a Filipino American, I’ve had the joy of celebrating both the rich traditions of Filipino culture and the festive spirit of American customs, making the holiday season even more meaningful.

In Filipino culture, Christmas is a long and joyous celebration. On Christmas Eve, our family comes together for a grand dinner filled with traditional dishes like lechon, lumpia, and other Filipino delicacies. After enjoying this special meal, we attend Midnight Mass, or Misa de Gallo, a cherished Filipino tradition that marks the beginning of Christmas. It’s a time for reflection, prayer, and the joy of being surrounded by family.

For Filipinos, Christmas Eve isn't complete without the Noche Buena, a midnight feast enjoyed after Mass. Once the clock strikes midnight, we exchange gifts, a beloved tradition that adds to the festive spirit. The excitement of unwrapping presents and sharing moments of gratitude and love makes the night even more memorable.

On the American side of my celebration, Christmas morning is just as magical. I love waking up to the smell of pancakes, waffles, and hot cocoa filling the house, signaling the start of a cozy Christmas breakfast. This quiet morning spent with family, enjoying simple yet delicious treats, is a tradition I hold dear.

Later in the day, we come together for a hearty Christmas lunch with family and friends. The table is laden with classic American dishes like turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and a variety of pies—pumpkin, apple, and pecan. It’s a time of laughter, conversation, and shared moments of joy, where we celebrate the holiday season with loved ones.

Whether it's the lively celebrations of Noche Buena or the festive American Christmas lunch, both sides of my heritage create a holiday experience full of warmth and joy. The blend of Filipino and American traditions makes Christmas a time to reflect, celebrate, and cherish the moments spent with family and friends.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and joyful holiday season, filled with love and cherished memories.
