Celebrating Independence in Paradise: Sand On My Feet & Swimming with the Pigs

Posted by Ely Mata on

The 4th of July is a time for celebration and a cherished national holiday in the United States, this year, I decided to make it extra special by embarking on a new adventure in the beautiful Bahamas. As a first-time visitor to this tropical paradise, I was eager to soak up the sun, explore the stunning beaches, and experience the vibrant culture.

The journey to the Bahamas began with a bit of turbulence as our plane made its way through the skies. However, the skilled pilot quickly found a smoother flight path, relieving my initial unease. Finally, we touched down on the white sands of New Providence Island, were our resort awaited us at the picturesque cable beach. The sight of the crystal-clear turquoise waters and the soft, powder-like sand instantly put me at ease, making the bumpy flight a distant memory.

While packing for my trip, I made a conscious decision to forgo bulky carry-on bags and instead opted for my trusty TOTE-ALL™ handbag. This choice allowed me to effortlessly carry all my essentials while maintaining a chic and put-together look. It was truly liberating to travel with such ease and efficiency.

One of the highlights of my Bahamas adventure was a visit to Rose Island, where I had the opportunity to swim with the famous swimming pigs. To my surprise, these adorable creatures were not wild but actually trained by a professional handler. Our guide provided us with useful instructions and guidelines on how to interact with the pigs, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. As I frolicked in the water, I couldn't resist bringing along my Gertrude bamboo bag, which miraculously survived the aquatic escapade unscathed.

Exploring the local cuisine and shopping for unique souvenirs is an essential part of any trip, and the Bahamas did not disappoint. I discovered one delightful traditional Bahamian favorite, the rum cake, a sweet treat that has become a symbol of the country's culinary excellence. I couldn't resist buying some to take home and savor the flavors of the Bahamas long after my vacation ended. Additionally, I stumbled upon a charming store called My Ocean, which specializes in hand-crafted sarongs. Captivated by a beautiful blue sarong, I couldn't resist making it a part of my Bahamian memento collection.

As a New Yorker, finding moments of relaxation can be challenging, given the fast-paced nature of city life. However, my time in the Bahamas provided me with the perfect opportunity to unwind and recharge. I spent endless hours lounging on the beach, basking in the sun, and indulging in refreshing coconut juice. It was a blissful escape from the daily grind, allowing me to rediscover the joy of simply being in the present moment.
